San Francisco City Hall weddings are some of my favorite weddings to photograph. San Francisco City Hall is one of the most gorgeous settings for a wedding if you’re thinking of eloping or having an intimate civil ceremony with your friends and family. I’ve been honored to photograph hundreds of weddings at City Hall since 2007. Many of my City Hall weddings have been featured in The Knot Magazine, Green Weddings Shoes, and Classic Bride.
If it’s just the two of you, I’m also happy to act as your witness. If family and friends are joining you, I can capture all of the great moments of your wedding day with your guests. If you’re interested in including other locations after your ceremony at City Hall, I know San Francisco very well and can suggest wonderful photo locations for you.
I offer affordable hourly City Hall wedding photography packages. Contact Lilia for pricing.
Getting Married at San Francisco City Hall
You can read the official documentation on how to get married at San Francisco City Hall from the official website for San Francisco City Hall weddings. You will need to make two reservations at City Hall. The first reservation is to acquire your marriage license. The second appointment is for your actual ceremony time.
If you are setting your marriage license and ceremony appointments for the same day, you only need 30 minutes between the two appointments. For example, if your ceremony is scheduled for 1pm, then you would want to schedule your license appointment for 12:30pm.
If you are a resident of California, you can acquire your marriage license from any county in California.
Most couples have their wedding ceremony in the rotunda of City Hall. This is the area at the top of the grand staircase in the center of City Hall under the dome.
If you are having a large group of family and friends at the ceremony, you may want to consider reserving either the Fourth Floor or the Mayor’s Balcony. Contact the City Hall special events coordinator to reserve either the Fourth Floor or the Mayor’s Balcony for your ceremony.
If you reserve either the Fourth Floor or the Mayor’s Balcony for your wedding, I highly recommend either hiring your own officiant for a personalized, thoughtful ceremony.
Ceremonies at City Hall are available Monday through Friday from 9:30am through 3:30pm every 30 minutes. Keep in mind that there will be two other couples getting married in your time slot. Expect some time delays because it takes time for the marriage commissioner to check in each couple before their ceremony.
City Hall is busy throughout the day. The early morning appointments tend to be quieter. Friday is the busiest day for ceremonies, and expect there to be lots of people at City Hall throughout the day.
The official ceremony officiants at City Hall are volunteer marriage commissioners deputized by the City and County of San Francisco. If you would like to have a friend or family member officiate your ceremony, he or she can be deputized as a marriage commissioner for the day.
