How to Get Married at San Francisco City Hall

Hello! My name is Lilia. Since 2007, I have photographed over 500+ City Hall weddings.

San Francisco City Hall weddings are some of my favorite weddings to photograph. City Hall is one of the most gorgeous settings for a wedding. Couples travel from all over the world to get married here.

If family and friends are joining you, they will also be included in candid photos as well as family portraits.

If it is just the two of you, I am happy to act as your witness.

If you are interested in including other locations after your ceremony at City Hall, I know San Francisco very well and can suggest wonderful photo locations for you.

Affordable City Hall wedding photography packages are available. SEE PRICING.

AS SEEN IN PEOPLE MAGAZINE
Many of my weddings have been published in People Magazine, Style Me Pretty, The Knot Magazine, Green Wedding Shoes, Wedding Chicks, San Francisco Brides Magazine, and Classic Bride.

HOW TO GET MARRIED AT CITY HALL
You can read the official documentation on how to get married at San Francisco City Hall from the official website for San Francisco City Hall weddings.

You will need to make two reservations at City Hall.

  1. Marriage License Appointment
  2. Ceremony Appointment

If you are setting your marriage license and ceremony appointments for the same day, you only need 30 minutes between the two appointments. For example, if your ceremony is scheduled for 1pm, then you would want to schedule your license appointment for 12:30pm.

If you are a resident of California, you can acquire your marriage license from any county in California 90 days before your wedding date.

CEREMONY LOCATION
Most couples have their wedding ceremony in the rotunda of City Hall. This is the area at the top of the grand staircase in the center of City Hall under the dome. Each couple is married one at a time.

Fourth Floor of City Hall

If you are having a large group of family and friends at the ceremony, you may want to consider reserving either the Fourth Floor or the Mayor’s Balcony. Contact the City Hall special events coordinator to reserve either the Fourth Floor or the Mayor’s Balcony for your ceremony.

If you reserve either the Fourth Floor or the Mayor’s Balcony for your wedding, I highly recommend either hiring your own officiant for a personalized, thoughtful ceremony.

CEREMONY TIME
Ceremonies at City Hall are available Monday through Friday from 9:00am through 3:30pm every 30 minutes. Keep in mind that there will be two other couples getting married in your time slot.

Ceremony Officiant
The ceremony officiants at City Hall are volunteer marriage commissioners deputized by the City and County of San Francisco. They are volunteers and do a wonderful job officiating your wedding ceremony.
